Luz del Carmen Ibañez was Sworn in as a Judge of the International Criminal Court
Today Doctor Luz del Carmen Ibañez Carranza has presented her oath of office as a Judge of the International Criminal Court, in a ceremony that took place in the seat of the Court in the city of The Hague. Together with her, 5 new judges were sworn in, Solomy Balungi Bossa (Uganda), Tomoko Akane (Japan), Reine Alapini-Gansou (Benin), Kimberly Prost (Canada) and Rosario Salvatore Aitala (Italy). Doctor Ibañez has a great professional trajectory in Peru as a Criminal Prosecutor. Among her most important achievements are the trial and conviction of the highest leaders of the terrorist groups Shining Path and MRTA, Abimael Guzmán and Víctor Polay. She also investigated many other high profile cases for some of the most serious crimes committed in the time of internal violence of the years 1980s and 1990s in Peru.
Her election took place in December last year by the XVI Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute in New York. The Assembly which recognized her great professional qualities by electing her in the first round of voting, after an intense campaign of Peruvian diplomacy. Her election constitutes a recognition of the commitment of Peru with the Rule of Law, International Law and the fight against impunity.
In this way Doctor Ibañez becomes the first Peruvian expert to integrate this Tribunal of the highest prestige in the world, in charge of the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes of importance for the international community as a whole.
